Project Description

Rice, as we know it, is staple all throughout Asia. It is one of the country’s most important agricultural crops. In Brgy. Bato, Biliran, account officer, Ptra. Crisdel Dimakiling, shared about the rice processing business that their group started operating on December 2018. NMK Rice Trading group is a product of the SYB and GYB trainings that MBC in partnership with PhilRads conducted in 2018 from July to August.

The rice production

They buy unhusked rice from the farmers, process it through solar drying, then grinding, and finally, selling it. They look forward to operating during the rice season (March to April) where they have yet to experience what would be the peak of the year.

The group also sets aside rice for their own consumption, patronizing their own product. Ptra. Crisdel noted with enthusiasm that the members who used to consume NFA rice are now able to eat commercial quality rice. Better rice, better quality of life.

Side effects

Beyond food accessibility, the members see great value on the things they’ve learned from the trainings. They now know the basic ins and outs of starting and running a business. Financial literacy is key to encourage transformation in their financial practices. For some of them, they have just started to save money, to invest, to manage properly, so on and so forth. Consequently, some have left their lending groups or pautangan, having enough for their needs. These changes do not only apply to the way they run the business but also how they run their household.
